inkProfit Intel

Built for indie publishers, to catch rising niches or skip dead zones, before competitors crowd in.

inkProfit is a publishing scaling partner — fiction, nonfiction, children's, low-content. This dashboard is the operating brain: dossier-grade niche research, catalyst calendar, off-Amazon channel intelligence, and the playbooks of authors who actually built durable revenue.

Methodology

Every verdict here is dossier-backed. No magic. No vibes. Five steps, repeated for every niche we ship.

1
Research

Trade-trunk identification, awareness-window confirmation, Google Trends and Movers & Shakers cross-check.

2
Audit

Every claim verified against a citable source. If a number can't be cited in 5 minutes, it gets dropped or flagged pending.

3
Score

NVS rubric — six dimensions, 0–15 each, bonus 0–10. Bands: 80+ Conv 1, 60–79 Conv 2, 40–59 yellow, below 40 watch or red.

4
Ship

Verdicts ship with explicit pen-name positioning, pricing floor, sub-angles, marketing posture.

5
Cross-check

Quarterly re-audit on every live niche. Lifecycle drift, trade-trunk shifts, awareness-date changes — caught and demoted.

The Five-Framework Philosophy

Self-publishing isn't one market. It's five overlapping ones, each with different economics, different gatekeepers, different rules of the road. One dashboard, five frameworks, no mixing.

AStandard Nonfiction

The KDP nonfiction core. Paperback $11.99+, conviction tiers, NVS-scored. Where most of the audited niches live.

BFiction Universe

Romance, romantasy, thriller, cozy, YA, MG, LitRPG. Genre × tropes × KU economics. Treated as long-form intelligence, not niche-level production.

CPicture & Activity Books

Illustrated picture books, activity, coloring, board, workbook. Production-cost-first, gift-market-first. Schema locked; niche population pending.

DSelf-Publishing Playbooks

What actually works at scale. Sanderson on Kickstarter, Penn's ten income streams, Dawson's Facebook ads, 20Books50K, BookTok. 20 entries.

EOff-Amazon Channels

Etsy printables, Kickstarter for books, Fourthwall direct-to-fan, IngramSpark wide. Channel-first, not niche-first. 18 channels mapped with verdict.

Glossary

Verdict
The shipping call on a niche. GREEN = publish. YELLOW = differentiate or skip. WATCH = monitor only. RED = saturated, dangerous, or KDP-policy-risky. Do not publish.
Conviction
Conv = conviction tier 1–3. Conv 1 = highest confidence, publish now. Conv 2 = solid GREEN, one dimension less certain. Conv 3 = lower confidence, wider window, more differentiation needed.
Lifecycle
Where the niche sits on its curve — rising, active, evergreen, fading, saturated, dead, watch. Drives whether you push or pull.
CPC Tier
Cost-per-click band — low, mid, high. Low CPC tiers absorb scale gracefully; high CPC tiers demand sharper targeting and higher conversion rates.
NVS
Niche Validation Score, 0–100. Six dimensions × 15 + bonus 10. Demand, supply gap, trunk dominance, royalty viability, catalyst window, defensibility. The basis of every verdict.
Saturation
Density of competing titles in the top BSR slots. Very low = green-field. Saturated = late, walk away.
Origin
What created the niche. Cultural-permanent, demographic-driven, pharmaceutical-driven, influencer-created, diagnostic-shift, event-driven. Origin predicts lifespan.
Trigger
The specific event, wave, or shift that opened the window. Knowing the trigger tells you when the window closes.
Catalyst
Awareness month, federal holiday, sports event, religious calendar — anything that creates a recurring buying spike. Drives the calendar.
Deadline
File-lock date. Books must be live by this date to capture the peak. Plan back from here.
GREEN / YELLOW / WATCH / RED
GREEN = ship. YELLOW = sharpen the angle before shipping. WATCH = wait for confirmed signal. RED = no.
Framework A / B / C / D / E
A = standard nonfiction. B = fiction. C = picture/activity/kids. D = playbooks (case studies + tactics). E = off-Amazon channels.

FAQ

Who is this dashboard for?
Indie publishers running KDP at scale, ghostwriting clients shipping multiple titles per month, and operators who need market timing rather than generic publishing advice. If you're publishing one book a year as a hobby, this is overkill. If you're running an ad portfolio, this is the operating brain.
How often is the intel updated?
The data layer (data.json) gets a version bump on every audit pass — quarterly at minimum, monthly when the market is moving. Awareness windows and trade-trunk shifts are tracked continuously.
Why named months instead of "next 30 days"?
Because the publishing cycle is anchored to fixed calendar events — Father's Day in June, awareness months by name, World Cup in June 2026, Ramadan in February 2027. "Next 30 days" hides the cycle. Named months expose it.
What's an NVS score?
Six dimensions scored 0–15 each, bonus 0–10. Demand, supply gap, trunk dominance, royalty viability, catalyst window, defensibility. Bands: 80+ Conv 1, 60–79 Conv 2, 40–59 yellow, below 40 watch or red. Honest scoring, including admitting when dimensions are pending data.
Why is Framework C not fully built out?
Because picture and activity book economics are production-cost-first, not niche-first. The schema is locked; populating niche-level data requires illustration-cost benchmarks and gift-market sales data that aren't fully assembled yet. Honest status now, full build when the data justifies it.
Is the audit really free?
Yes. Submit the form, grant view access to the ad accounts, get a structured audit within two business days. No upsell pressure. If the audit shows no help is needed, that's what we say.
Do you handle fiction and children's books?
Yes. inkProfit operates across fiction, nonfiction, children's, and low-content. The intel split — Framework A through E — reflects that scope. The audit and management work spans all four pillars.
